Holding Light is an installation by Emily Quandahl presented at Resource in December 2024. The work consisted of 22 lanterns created in response to the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. Built through repetition and careful construction, the installation explored subtle variation within a shared structure.

The installation investigates light passing through color rather than light hitting a surface. Layers of painted rice paper reference the washes of color used in the artist’s paintings, allowing color to be experienced as something carried by light. Installed during the darkest time of the year, the work frames the solstice as a moment of pause and transition.
